Crocheted Pencil Case for Back to School

Even though it is still 100+ degrees in my corner of the country it is about time for school to start.  My kids really don’t want to go back to school this year.  We have been very busy this summer and have had a lot of fun together.  To be completely honest I really don’t want this summer to come to an end either. To ease the sadness for all of us I have been working on a few items for back to school.  I have made my kiddos a few things that we typically buy. This way they can carry a bit of me with them during the school day and will have something none of the other kids have.  First on our list is this super cool crocheted pencil case.

All kids need some type of pencil case for the school year.  A fun crocheted one made perfect sense to me!

Crocheted-Pencil-Case-Darice-1Crocheted Pencil Case Supplies:

  • Darice Red and Green Silky Soft Yarn
  • Darice Size H Crochet Hook
  • Darice Frog Eyes
  • Darice Scissors
  • Darice Needle

Crocheted Pencil Case Pattern

Chain 36.

Single crochet in second chain from the hook, and in each chain til the end. You should have 35 stitches.

Work a single crochet into the other side of each of the chains.

Continue working around without stopping or joining for 15 rounds.

After you have completed 15 rounds, chain one and turn your work.  Work a single crochet into each stitch for 35 stitches.

*Chain one, turn your work. Single crochet into each stitch across.* (35 stitches) repeat from *to* for 5 rows.

Change to red yarn. Single crochet into each stitch across. Chain eight past single crochets. Turn your work and single crochet into the first chain from the hook.  Single crochet into each stitch across. (43 stitches)

Chain one, turn your work. Single crochet into each single crochet, stopping before you reach the 8 chain stitches. (35 stitches)

Chain one, turn your work. Single crochet 12, chain4, skip 3 single crochets, single crochet for 4 stitches, chain 4, skip 3 single crochets, single crochet to the end of the row.  (this makes your eye holes)

Chain one, turn your work. Single crochet 11, work 4 single crochets into the chain4 space, single crochet 4, work 4 single crochets into the chain4 space, single crochet to the end of the row.  Chain eight past single crochets. Turn your work and single crochet into the first chain from the hook.  Single crochet into each stitch across. (43 stitches)

Chain one, turn your work.  Single crochet into each stitch to the end of the single crochets. (35 stitches)

Tie off all ends and weave them in.

Your eye holes should look like this.

Crocheted-Pencil-Case-Darice-3The tie at the side of your face mask should look like this before it is tied.  Tie these in a knot.

Count down seven rows on the green portion of your crocheted pencil case and add your eyes.  Place them on the same line and measure them with the eye holes you made BEFORE you add the back to the eyes.  Adjust as needed.

Crocheted-Pencil-Case-Darice-5After you have measured that your eye holes will fit over your eyes, add the backs to the eyes.  MAKE SURE NOT TO TIGHTEN THE BACKS TOO MUCH.  If you make them too tight the button holes will have a hard time making it around the eye.

Crocheted-Pencil-Case-Darice-6After you have the eyes attached you are ready to fill your crocheted pencil case with school supplies.

Full-Pencil-CaseWhile you’re crocheting for back to school, think about making up this cute crochet coin purse that’s perfect for carrying lunch money in!

Happy back to school crafting!
