Valentine’s Day Accessories: 8-bit Heart DIY Bobby Pins

Crafting with perler beads is fun and easy enough for you and your kids to do. There are tons of different things you can make with just a bucket of perler beads, but since it’s nearing Valentines day, I chose to do some retro game inspired 8-bit heart DIY bobby pins.

8-bit-heart-DIY-bobby-pins-Darice-28-bit Heart DIY Bobby Pins Supplies:

  • Perler Beads (red, black and white)
  • Peg Board
  • Iron
  • Parchment Paper
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Plain Darice Bobby Pins

Step 1. Pick out the perler beads you need to use for easier work – you will need 2 white, 16 black and 16 red.

Step 2. On your peg board, do the heart’s outline first following the photo below.

Step 3. Add the 2 white perler beads in one corner, and then fill in the rest with the red.

Step 4. With the parchment paper between the perler beads and your iron, start ironing it in a circular motion and even pressure. Do not put too much pressure as it will melt the perler beads unevenly. You will want to use the medium setting on your iron. Flip over and iron again, making sure the parchment paper is between your iron and the perler beads.

There are two options of ironing this: some people prefer it without the holes, and some prefer it with the holes. I personally prefer it with really small holes..

I opted to attach my hearts to make DIY bobby pins as I have short hair now and use more hairpins than ever! But you can also attach them to headbands, elastics, brooch pins, and even rings.

8-bit-heart-DIY-bobby-pins-Darice-1I think these DIY bobby pins are perfect for Valentine’s Day – don’t you?

Happy crafting, friends!
