It may not be Christmas yet but I just can’t stop thinking about New Year festivities – there’s something about all the glitz of NYE celebrations that draw me to it more than Christmas. Maybe it’s the fun parties, the colorful fireworks and the fanfare that surrounds it (specially in Times Square). Here’s a fun way to make your own DIY New Year headband for this year – and just change it up for the next!
- Darice Headband with Wire Teeth
- Shrink Plastic
- Darice Heat Gun
- Spray Adhesive & Clear Glaze Spray
- Spray Paint (I used black)
- Darice Glitter
- Hot Glue Gun
- Tinsel Trim
Step One. Cut out the numbers on the shrink plastic. You can use a die-cutting machine for this, or print your numbers, trace them onto shrink plastic and then cut them out.
Step Two. Bake them in the oven for the time and temperature it says on the shrink plastic’s package. You may also use a heat gun. I baked mine in the oven and used a heat gun to straighten some of the numbers since they curled up on themselves.
Step Three. Spray paint the front and the back of your letters with the color you like, and then use some spray adhesive to cover both sides as well in glitter. Finally, spray a thin layer of clear glaze to prevent the glitter from falling off.
Step Four. Attach your number onto your headband by hot-gluing them, supporting each number until it’s fully dry (and doesn’t move).
Make sure you position them the way you want, but it’s easy to remove it and start over again if need be. You may want to add support at the back of the DIY New Year headband so your numbers are more stable.
Step Five. Add some tinsel trim to your DIY New Year headband. If your trim is thin, you may want to fold it a few times to get the volume you want. Hot glue the trim behind the numbers and wait for it to dry. Don’t forget to cut the excess!
Step Six. Finally, use some of the tinsel to cover the glued parts of your numbers. Take a bit of the tinsel trim, twist them and then glue them down with your hot glue gun.
And your DIY New Year headband is done! I think this is a pretty fun activity for girlfriends before heading out to an NYE party. Use different color combinations for this DIY New Year headband and have fun!
