A bit of hemp, a few beads on hand, and I just had a flashback to the 70’s!!! Follow along for this groovy DIY macrame necklace tutorial.
DIY macrame necklace tutorial supplies:
Open the packet of hemp and fold the strand in half. Fold in half a few more times until you have a folded bundle measuring approximately 19”.
Cut the loops on the ends that have the two beginning tails.
1: Taking one strand of hemp, fold it in half and place a split ring over the fold.
2: Bring the tail ends up over the split ring and under through the folded end.
3: Pull your tail ends simultaneously to tighten around the split ring. This is called a lark’s head knot.
4: Repeat these 5 more times, giving you a grand total of 12 strands of hemp. Flip your ring over, I like the straight line of the lark’s head knot.
We will be working with 4 strands of hemp at all times to create the square knot.
5: First step in creating a square knot is to take the hemp strand to the left and bring it over the two middle strands of hemp. Then under the strand of hemp on the right of the 4 strands you are working with.
6: Take the tail of the hemp strand that went under and bring it up behind the 2 center hemp strands. And then through the space between the left hemp strand and the left center hemp strand.
7: Tighten the knot by pulling on the left and right outer hemp strands from the group of 4 hemp strands.
8: What this is called is a half square knot. If you were to continue just making half square knots, you would end up with a spiral of knots.
9: For the second part of the square knot, it is just the reverse of the first part. Take the hemp strand to the right and bring it over the two middle strands of hemp. Then under the strand of hemp on the left of the 4 strands you are working with.
10: Take the tail of the hemp strand that you went under, bring it up behind the 2 center hemp strands and through the space between the right hemp strand and the right center hemp strand.
11: Tighten the knot by pulling on the left and right outer hemp strands from the group of 4 hemp strands.
12: Repeat for the other 2 sets of 4 hemp strands.
Alternating the hemp strands, but always working with a group of 4 hemp strands tie square knots.
To add beads, slide the beads on the 2 center hemp strands and then make your square knot.
Your macrame design can be used as a necklace, just attach a cord to the split ring.
Or keep it as a keyring to embellish a backpack or purse. Enjoy!
