Literally, decoden means “phone decoration” in Japanese. However, this over-the- top craft has grown beyond just decorative phone cases. It’s now used along with collage clay, charms and bling to decorate almost anything you can imagine.
There are even specialty lines of cabochon, specialty plastic and clay embellishments, specifically designed for this super cute craft.

So, here are the basics to mastering the Japanese art of decoden:
- Choose your craft. From sunglasses or tennis shoes to phone cases and picture frames, pick whatever it is that you want to bedazzle.
- Use collage clay, which is silicone designed to look like whipped frosting, to decorate your craft. Use piping tips to create a pretty pattern that will harden to look like freshly piped frosting or just spread the adhesive directly on your project to be covered later.
- Use a combination of embellishments and cabochons to customize your craft. Simply push the embellishments into the collage clay and let the finished project dry completely for 48-72 hours.
The coolest thing about decoden is that it’s 100% customizable. Everything you choose is completely up to you. Need some inspiration? Try any of the following on your decoden projects:
- Studs and spikes
- And more!
Plus, you can use polymer clay and mod melts to create your own custom trinkets that highlight your interests, personality or project theme. There are literally no rules when it comes to your creation.
