I love the look of resin, but not so much the process – there’s a lot of dry time involved, and the requirement of exact measurements. That’s not to say I wouldn’t do it ever – I like making resin pieces, but there are times when all you want to do is just one easy craft. This cameo necklace DIY is an easy way to mimic the look of resin, but without the complexity of the process!
Faux resin necklace DIY supplies:
- Darice Cameo Pendant setting
- Photo of Silhouette
- X-Acto Knife
- Darice Black Cardstock
- Darice Washi Tape
- Craft Paint and Paintbrush
- Glue
- Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel
- Small Darice Charms & Beads
- Darice Jump Rings & Necklace Chain
- Darice Jewelry Pliers
Step 1. Paint your cameo base white using acrylic paint. Make sure that there are no ‘bald spots’ – cover the whole cameo base with the white paint until semi-opaque.
Step 2. Start covering your cameo base with washi tape. If possible, line up the design with the other lines of washi tape so you have one seamless-looking design. If it still looks transparent after one layer of washi tape, you may double it up, but remember to match the design as much as you can to the first layer – washi tape is see-through so unmatching layers will be visible.
Step 3. Cut the excess washi tape with a box cutter or an x-acto knife. Be careful with this step as you do not want to cut too much of the tape!
Step 4. Prepare your photo silhouette. For the cameo base I used, my silhouette ended up at about 1.2″ in height. There are a lot of silhouette options you can use online – or make your own with a photo of yourself, your child, your pet – you get the idea! 🙂 I used my die-cutting machine to cut mine easily, but you can also do this by hand – it will just take a bit of patience. I used black cardstock for good contrast, but you can use whatever color you want. Glue down your silhouette to your washi tape by using normal white glue.

Now look at that shine! It’s basically just like resin, except much easier! Just Remember: the more the embossing enamel is heated up, the more it will turn yellow-ish in color so keep that in mind.
Step 6. For a little embellishment on my necklace DIY, I added a small charm and a bead from an old necklace. Attach your cameo onto a finished chain and you are done!
I just love how this necklace DIY project turned out! I may do a few more to give to my sister and friends, but for now I’ll be planning to wear this sweet thing.
