Show off your team pride with our fun pom pom wreath DIY tutorial that uses yarn in your favorite team’s colors!
A consolation for the summer coming to an end soon is the fact that college football starts this week! In our house, college football is like a 5 month holiday which is celebrated weekly. My husband and I even got engaged on the 50 yard line of Ohio Stadium so you can see we’re big fans.
Since football is like a season in and of itself, I decorate accordingly and I’m always looking for fun new ways to introduce our team’s colors (scarlet and gray) into our home decor. This year I decided to make a pom pom wreath to show our team pride to the whole neighborhood.
Whether you celebrate football season as a holiday or you just love colorful, soft and pretty things; this pom pom wreath DIY project will make the perfect door decor. It’s such a fun DIY that the whole family will enjoy, and of course can be made in any color combination!
Team Colors Pom Pom Wreath DIY Supplies:
- Darice Pom Pom Loom (Makes 1 ½, 2 and 3 inch pom poms.)
- Darice Silky Soft Craft Yarn in your team’s colors. (For a 12″ wreath form you will use about 5 skeins of yarn)
- Wreath Form
- Darice Unfinished Wood Football
- Brown and White Craft Paint
- Paint Brush
- Darice Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Making pom poms is super easy with the Darice pom pom maker. In the team colors of your choice, create pom poms of all 3 sizes by wrapping the yarn around the pom pom makers as shown on the package directions. Leave out a couple inches of extra yarn before wrapping to be able to tie the pom poms around the wreath. I covered the pom pom maker very heavily to create denser and poufier pom-poms. My pom pom wreath used 32 pom poms but every size wreath will be different and you can personalize to your liking. Trim off any longer strands to make your pom poms perfectly round.
Wrap yarn around the wreath form so that the styrofoam isn’t visible.
Play with positioning the pom poms on the wreath in an arrangement that you like and then tie them to the wreath form.
For football season I thought it would be fun to add a football to the pom pom wreath so I painted a small wood football shape with brown craft paint for the ball and white craft paint for the football laces.
If you want to make your pom pom wreath for a different sport, you can also use an unfinished wood circle cut out and paint it to look like a basketball, soccer ball, baseball, etc. Or if you don’t want it to be sport specific, you can personalize it with a wood cut out letter for a monogram. What colors would you want in your pom pom wreath?
