Hi everyone, it’s Natalie from Doodlecraft! Mermaid and fish scales are so much fun and are making their way into home decor! This mermaid themed wall art with DIY fish scales is a gorgeous statement piece that you can make with very little effort! It’s a simple project that is perfect for hanging in the home, using as a backdrop for a fun under-the-sea mermaid party or scaling it down for a stunning greeting card!
- Studio 71 16 X 20″ Stretched Canvas
- 2 Inch Circle Paper Punch (this is what I used for this piece, smaller punches would look amazing too)
- Blue cardstock paper in (12-14 sheets in different shades. Add glitter and holographic paper too.)
- Darice Hot Glue and Gun
To make your DIY fish scales you will punch circles out of your selected paper. With an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper, I could get 20 circles. Punch the circles upside down. This makes it easy to line up where the punch will go and maximize the use of your paper.
The variety of colors is beautiful. Scatter them evenly throughout the canvas or try an ombre style–it would look amazing as well. Cut circles of iridescent cellophane with scissors to overlay on a few of the scales. I used 7 shades of blue and some glitter paper for my DIY fish scales.
Place the circles along the edge of the canvas leaving half of them off the edge, creating a scallop border. 8 two inch circles fit across the canvas perfectly. As long as you have an even number of inches on your canvas size, it will fit perfectly.
This nautical wooden DIY fish decor is another way to add a whimsical beachy touch to your home!
