I love to craft with Darice unfinished wood projects. They can be finished and combined in lots of different ways to create one of a kind pieces of home decor. I decided to join the chicken wire window frame with a planter box to create rustic DIY shelf decor. This will be perfect for displaying and organizing small items!
DIY Shelf Decor Supplies:
- Darice Chicken Wire Window Frame
- Darice Chicken Wire Planter Box
- Darice Wood Glue
- Studio 71 Paint Brushes
- Folk Art Chalk Paint: Grotto
- Folk Art Home Decor Wax: Clear and Antique
- Folk Art Painted Finishes: Light and Dark Rust
Step 1. To begin your DIY shelf decor, paint the unfinished wood frame and the planter box with the chalk paint. Let it dry.
Step 2. Brush the dark rust paint over the chicken wire portions of the frame and planter box. Added bonus: This will cover up any teal paint that you got on the wire! Let it dry.
Step 3. Brush the light rust paint (reddish color) on parts of the chicken wire. I focused on the edges and corners. Allow the paint to dry.
Step 4. Brush the Antique Wax (it has a brown tint to it) on the edges and corners of the painted wood. I like to put a small amount of the wax on a full brush, dab the excess wax off on a piece of scrap paper, and then brush it on. You can use a cloth to wipe off any excess wax.
Step 5. Seal the painted wood surfaces with wax. Brush a light application on and let it dry.
Step 6. Use Darice wood glue to attach the planter box to the front of the window frame. Let it dry completely before moving the DIY shelf decor.
Keep in mind that this is a decorative shelf! If you decide to hang it on the wall, only place light items in the planter box. If you’d like to put something heavier in the planter box, then reinforce the project with screws. Have fun crafting and creating this rustic DIY shelf decor for your home!

If you wanted to put heavier objects in the planter box, some nails and a screwdriver would probably do the trick! I think it’d be great to actually put some plants in here as well. Thank you for sharing this DIY project!
