Ready to learn how to make reverse canvas art? This simple technique gives you rustic, farmhouse style art in minutes….on the cheap. That is a combination that’s a winner in my book. Choose from our free cut file for your art or create your own masterpiece. Either way, you are sure to love this technique.
- Darice Canvas (I used this Squangles version)
- Wood Stain
- Paint Brush
- Free Downloadable Cut File (click here to access)
- Cricut or Other Cutting Machine
- Iron on Vinyl in Black
- Staple Gun
- Craft Knife
Flip the frame over and you have a gorgeous, rustic frame just ready for your project! Stain this portion with the stain of your choice. Brush on with a paint brush, allow to sit a few minutes, and then wipe off with a rag. Then set aside to dry completely while you finish the project.
Download the cut file here and then upload to the software for your cutting machine. Cut from heat treat or iron on vinyl. Remember to mirror your image before cutting! Remove all excess vinyl from around words and the center of letters. NOTE: Weeding tools make this process easier but are not required.
Turn the canvas over to the front side and position your art in the center. Remember that this is just one example of what you can do with this same technique. You can add paint or any other medium to the canvas during this step.
Reverse canvas art is an inexpensive way to make your own framed art in minutes. That rustic frame was hidden inside a canvas! Remember that each canvas is different and you never know what you will reveal when you remove the canvas from the outside. That is part of the fun of this technique, however!
