In a world full of appointments and deadlines, it’s so important to take a break and breathe. Even just a few minutes of detachment can do wonders for your concentration and focus. Luckily, you don’t have to go too far to do just that. Inspired by beautiful Japanese zen gardens, this mini DIY zen garden lets you meditate right in your own home or office. You can also create faux cacti for your little garden with some Darice supplies and clever techniques — no green thumb required! Did I mention it only takes 15 minutes to make? Keep reading to learn how to do it!
- Darice 8 x 4 Round Paper Mache Box (You will use the lid only).
- Darice White Decorative Sand.
- Darice Lime Green Teardrop Acrylic Bead Strand.
- Darice Silver Acrylic Small Cone Spike Beads.
- Darice Assorted River Rocks.
- Darice Garden Tools.
- Darice Mini Glue Gun.
Step 1. To make the “cacti”, flip each acrylic teardrop upside down. The pointed end should be facing downward. Hot glue the beads together in bunches of two or three. Keep it natural and organic by gluing the beads at an angle.
One package has enough beads to create two bunches of two and one bunch of three. Of course, you can use another package of beads to create more cacti. For best results, use no more than three beads for each bunch.
Step 3. Pour the entire container of white decorative sand into the paper mache box lid to create the base of your DIY zen garden. One container of Darice white sand (1.25 pounds) has just enough to fill up an 8-inch box lid. If you are using a bigger lid, you’ll need more sand.
Step 6. Now, here’s the fun part! Take one of the garden tools and graze it through the sand. I used the 5.5-inch rusted fork tool for this part.
This would be an adorable centerpiece for a living room table. You can also keep in your office or studio when you need a few seconds to zone out. If you’re looking for a kid-friendly version of this project that doesn’t involve sand getting dumped all over their rooms, check out this DIY mini garden for kids.
