With my yard covered in a blanket of snow, I start thinking thoughts of spring and ideas for DIY spring decor projects. Confession: I kill succulents. I have read many articles and blog posts on how easy succulents are to maintain. I must have super succulent killing powers! I love the look, so I was thrilled to find artificial succulents. This project features these artificial succulents in a charming rustic DIY spring decor planter box that is a bright spot in my otherwise dreary winter entryway.
DIY Spring Decor Planter Box Supplies:
- Wood & Chicken Wire Planter Box
- Darice Expressions Adhesive Floral Stakes
- Darice Spanish Moss
- Floral Foam
- Darice Chipboard Letters
- Rust-Oleum One Step Dark Walnut Stain
- Darice Orange Painted Butterfly with Wire
- Darice Assorted Butterflies
- Artificial Succulents
- Darice Glue Gun
The first thing you will want to do is prepare your wooden/chicken wire planter. I wanted mine to be a rustic walnut color. I used a spray stain for this project. I was concerned about getting stain into the area inside the chicken wire, and spray stain was perfect for this!
I highly suggest you wear gloves for this step! I didn’t, and it took a week for the stain to fade on my hands. Also protect your work area. I sprayed the stain while the planter box was inside of a cardboard box. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly. In the meantime, you can create the “SPRING” sticky sticks.
Select Darice chipboard letters to spell “SPRING.” You could choose to color the chipboard letters. I left mine the (raw) gray color. Remove the adhesive backing from six sticky sticks.
I was pleasantly surprised with the “stickiness” of the sticky sticks!
Attach your chipboard letters to the adhesive patch on the sticky sticks.
Make sure your letters are centered. Repeat for each letter.
The next step for your DIY spring decor is to remove the Darice butterflies from the packaging. The larger 2 1/2″ butterflies come attached to wire.
Using a straw, or pencil, wrap the wire of the butterfly into a coil.
Slide the wire from the straw, and attach the end of the coil onto the sticky patch of the sticky stick to the side of your letter.
This will make a fun butterfly on a spring! Continue to add butterflies to your chipboard letters as desired.
Set the finished sticky stick letters aside.
Using hot glue, secure Spanish moss to the top and sides of your floral foam.
Insert the moss covered foam into the wooden chicken wire planter. It will be a tight fit. I used a stick stick to push the moss down the sides to fully cover the foam once it was inside of the planter.
Insert the artificial succulents into the floral foam.
Insert your finished sticky stick letters into the floral foam, in-between the succulent plants.
Arrange the letters how you like, at angles, or different heights.
Add additional butterflies if desired.
That’s it! A fun welcome-to-spring-planter that you can completely neglect and it will still thrive!
