If you’ve noticed at all this summer, straw hats with sequin writing are becoming SUPER popular! Ladies on the beach and fun vacation photos show personalized hats and with fun sayings. So why not take the trend a step further and add it into home decor? Today I’ll show you the SUPER easy way I took the straw hat trend and turned it into this easy DIY summer door decoration!
DIY Summer Door Decoration Supplies:
- Red Paint
- White Paint
- Green Paint
- Darice Green Ribbon
- Darice Red Flowers
- Black Sequins
- Darice Straw Hat
- Hot Glue
- Tacky Glue
- Darice Sequin Ribbon
Step One. To begin your DIY summer door decoration, paint the raised/round top part of the hat red. Keep in mind that you’ll be wrapping green ribbon around the base, so don’t go down too far onto the flat part of the hat, so the red doesn’t show where it shouldn’t.
Step Two. Wait for the red paint to dry. You’ll then add white and green together to create the next layer. I used the full green first, then mixed it with some white to add a gradient effect up the side of the hat, leaving the top red.
Step Three. Add your ribbon. In this caseI decided my ribbon was too thick, so I folded it in half and then hot glued it onto the hat. Using the same ribbon, I created a bow that I glued over where the edges of the ribbon met. I also added my flowers (optional) to either sides of the hat to add some whimsy.
Step Four. My kids helped me with this step. We glued on the large black sequins onto the top of the hat using hot glue to mimic the watermelon seeds.
Step Five. The final step for this DIY summer door decoration is to add the sequin writing. I used my red sequin ribbon for this part. I started with tacky glue (hot glue dries too fast) and I practiced writing my letters, then carefully used the glue to write SUMMER in cursive on the hat (if you have great cursive or hand lettering skills then you’ll likely do better at this part than I did). After I had my outline in glue, I carefully added the sequin ribbon onto it. The nice thing about using tacky glue is that if you mess up, just wipe it off with a wet rag and start over, the glue dries clear.
This DIY summer door decoration took no time at all to put together and makes a big statement on your front door!
