St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays that kind of creeps up on me! It is usually that morning that I remember that I need to wear green, and that starts the annual mad scramble through the closet for something appropriate. This year I am prepared! I made something that I can keep in my jewelry case to wear every year, like a tradition! Go me. This shamrock craft hat pin was easy to put together, and honestly- I think it is pretty stinking cute!
DIY Shamrock Craft Hat Pin Supplies:
- Darice Shamrock Picture Punch
- Darice Felt Black Top Hat
- Darice Pin Back
- Gold Paddle Wire
- Metallic Gold Tissue Paper
- Styrofoam Piece
- Glitter Sheet in Gold & Green (1/2″ by 4″ strip)
- Darice Heavy Duty Glue Gun
- Scissors
Begin your shamrock craft by creating your shamrock shapes. You can do this using a craft punch, electronic cutting machine, or a template.
Cut half of the shamrocks from the Glitter Silk paper facing up, and the other half of the shapes with the Glitter Silk paper facing down. This will give you shapes that will line up perfectly when you sandwich them together, back to back.
Wrap gold craft wire on a bamboo skewer, or similar tube shaped object. Trim wound wire into approximately 3″ coiled sections. Leave a straight edge on both ends of the coiled wires.
Using a hot glue gun, sandwich two shamrock shapes with the wire in the center.
Hold the two shamrocks together until the hot glue sets.
Repeat until you have several coiled wire shamrocks. Set aside.
Decide which end of your felt hat you would like facing towards the front. Using scissors, trim the opposite end of the hat brim.
Trim in a straight line right up to the hat. This will allow your shamrock craft pin to lie flat against you when wearing.
Using hot glue, adhere the pin back against the flat part of the hat, right underneath the cut brim, securing the straight edge to the pin.
Next, cut a small section of gold Glitter Silk to create a hat band. Adhere around the circumference of the hat using hot glue.
Trim a small piece of dry Styrofoam to fit the inside of the hat. Secure with hot glue.
You’ll then cut a 3″ x 3″ section of gold tissue paper.
Crumple the tissue paper and adhere it to the top of the Styrofoam.
Begin inserting the coiled shamrocks into the inside of the hat.
When all of the shamrocks are in place, you can arrange the wire how you like!
That’s it, you’re lucky shamrock craft pin is complete! Now you too will be whimsically pinch-proof each St. Patrick’s Day!
