Independent Retailer Month, which happens every July, is part of the “shop local” movement. While we encourage people to shop independent retail all year long, this is a time to highlight and celebrate the independent retailers who are often the backbone of local economies. These local businesses have a positive social and economic impact on their communities, and July is the month to acknowledge them. Business associations and local governments can use this month to highlight the importance of shopping at independently owned businesses.
Why the Movement is Growing

A study by Civic Economics found iIndependent retail returns 46.9% of all revenue to the local economy. “Since 1990, big businesses eliminated 4 million jobs, while small businesses added 8 million jobs.” -Small Business Administration
The idea to celebrate independent businesses started in the early 2000s and grew over the next decade. The two founders of local events, Tom Shay and Kerry Bannigan, joined forces in 2011 to create Independent Retailer Month USA. The campaign has grown and even expanded to other countries.
The movement has grown as research and personal experience point to the benefits of locally owned businesses. The Small Business Administration points out that small businesses have added twice as many jobs to the economy as big businesses have eliminated. Job growth comes when communities invest in and support local retailers. The Institute for Local Self-Reliance has determined that “each $100 spent at local independents generated $45 of secondary local spending, compared to $14 for a big-box chain.” Shopping small and staying local not only supports small business owners, it also helps the community economically.
As if that weren’t enough good news, studies also point to the fact that employees of indie businesses are happier and more productive. Local Economy conducted a survey of workers and found that “57.2 percent of small firm workers scored in the highest commitment/employee loyalty category, compared to 40.5 percent of large firm workers.” Once again, spending at your locally owned business is an investment in the growth of your city or town.
