My latest crocheted project is a crochet lovey pattern made out of bright colors and a flower. Isn’t that what springtime is made from? Loveys are great for using up spare yarn or for a quick gift. For those wondering what a lovey is, think of it as a cross between a baby blanket and a stuffed animal. I made my kiddos loveys when they were transitioning from sleeping with a beloved baby blanket. I have also heard of mothers using them for kids that like to take blankets with them in the car or other places a large blanket is difficult. Basically it’s a small security blanket.
When I made a lovey for my son, who had nightmares at the time, I told him that each stitch had lots of love to keep him safe. He sat with me while I stitched his crochet lovey pattern and we would talk about how much love that little blanket held. When I finished he was so happy and slept better than he had in months.

Before we get to the crochet lovey pattern, I have a photo tutorial of a granny square. I was very intimidated by granny squares when I started crocheting, however they are quite easy. When you do a lot of color changes there will be a lot of ends to weave in, but the end results are worth the pain/time of weaving in all those ends.
How to start a Granny Square:
Chain 4
Make a slip stitch into the first chain, making a loop. Then chain three.
Then double crochet into the loop.
Make one more double crochet into the loop. Chain 2, then make 3 double crochets into the loop. Repeat 2 more times to create four groups of double crochet. Slip stitch into the 2nd chain. {Round one is created}
Chain 3, then 2 double crochets into the chain 2 space, chain 1. Then 3 double crochet into the chain 2 space, chain 2, then 3 double crochet into the same chain 2 space. Continue around to create round 2. Slip stitch into the 2nd chain.
To continue making rounds {without color chain} chain 3, the 2 double crochets into the same 2 chain space. Then chain 1, then crochet 3 double crochets into the chain 1 space then chain 1. Double crochet 3 into the 2 chain space in the corner then chain 2 then double crochet 3 more and chain one. Continue around, till you reach the beginning where you slip stitch into the second chain of the first chain 3.
For a color change.
Cut the color you are working with after you finish your slip stitch. Leave a long end to weave in. Knot a new color on to your hook, and chain 3.
Then continue on like usual. Remember 3 double crochets in each 1 chain space, and 3 double crochet 2 chains and 3 double crochets in each corner. Always chain 1 after a group of 3 double crochets.
One more tip. When making your flower you will be working in the round, this means you do not join your rounds with a slip stitch, just continue in the next stitch. Using a stitch marker to show where a round begins is a good idea.

“Sew” the center on over the petals in the same manner.
Make sure you weave in all your ends to secure everything in place.
