About a month or so ago I made this crochet cowl pattern with some nice super bulky weight yarn. The stitch uses half double crochet worked in the back or third loop to make it look like it was knit instead of crocheted. Today I am sharing the pattern for a matching easy crochet hat made from the same yarn so that they are a matching set. I used the same stitch around the hat and added a big pom pom on the top to finish it.
The pattern is for an adult size hat, it fits me, but I tried it on my daughter and it fit her pretty well too. That was nice for me since it is a lot easier to take pictures of a hat on someone else. Of course, now she has claimed the hat and scarf for herself, I guess she figures that is payment for being my model.
Like the scarf, the hat is made using basic crochet stitches. The placement of the individual stitches is what creates the stitch pattern. I don’t often make pom poms for my hats but I felt like this one needed a pom pom to finish it. I ordered a pom pom maker to make it and I was surprised how much easier it was to do.

Round 12: ch 1, sc in third loop of each stitch around, join to first sc, finish off, weave in ends
Use the largest (3 inch) pom pom maker to make a pom pom for the top of the hat. Follow the instructions on the package but be sure to wrap the yarn around until it is very full so you get a nice, full pom pom. My first try I wrapped a single layer all the way around the pom pom maker and it was not as full as I wanted.
I tried a second time, wrapping until I couldn’t really wrap anymore and I was much happier with the fullness.
Attach the pom pom to the top of the easy crochet hat.
The super bulky yarn makes a really warm and cozy hat perfect for winter. Combine it with the matching scarf to complete the set.
