It’s time to start thinking about Halloween costumes! I’m not sure what I will be wearing, but I’m thinking my pretty crocheted DIY masquerade mask isn’t a bad option!
One of the reasons I love crochet is that it really feels like making something out of nothing. With just a hook and some thread you can make something totally awesome, like a DIY masquerade mask! This is a fun little project with impressive results.
Here’s everything you will need to make your own crocheted DIY masquerade mask.
Crocheted DIY Masquerade Mask Supplies:
- Darice Cotton Craft Embroidery Thread. (I used three full skeins of black).
- 2.75 mm Crochet Hook.
- Darice Satin Bat Mask.
- Fabric Stiffener.
- Darice Black Grosgrain Ribbon.
- Darice Hot Glue Gun.
This pattern is a little bit complicated, but totally do-able. Go slowly and refer to the photos of each step to help you through.
Special Stitches:
Picot (p): To form a picot, chain the number of chains indicated and then slip stitch to the front loop of the last stitch. This forms a little loop on the top of the stitch. A chain three picot will be abbreviated as ch3 p.
Treble Crochet (tr): A treble crochet (abbreviated tr) is worked the same as a double crochet, except the yarn is wrapped around the hook twice before being inserted into the fabric. Work loops off of the hook two at a time.
Double Treble Crochet (dtr): A double treble crochet (abbreviated dtr) is worked the same as a double crochet and treble crochet, except the yarn is wrapped around the hook three times before being inserted into the fabric. Work loops off of the hook two at a time.
Start by making the two eye holes.
Rnd 1: Ch 22, sl st to join.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 32 sc in ch 22 loop, sl st to join (32 sc).
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 7 sts, *ch3 p, sc in next 2 sts, repeat from * twice, ch5 p, sc in next 2 sts, ch6 p, sc in next st, (sc, ch 6, sc) all in next st, sc in next st, *ch 3 p, sc in next 2 sts, ch 3 p, sc in remaining 11 sts, ch 3, sl st to beginning sc. Finish off, weave in ends.

Start off by covering the Darice satin mask with plastic wrap. Cover your DIY masquerade mask with fabric stiffener, and squeeze out the excess. I used a bit of water to thin the stiffener out a bit and get it worked through the mask.
Place the crocheted mask onto the plastic covered mask, and stretch it out to the desired shape. Leave on the mask until completely dry and then carefully peel off. It will now hold the mask shape!
Cut two lengths of ribbon and loop end through one of the spaces on each side of the DIY masquerade mask. Secure with a drop of hot glue.
All done! Tie on that mask and you are all ready for the masquerade ball or any ol’ Halloween party.
