Crochet Owl Keychain

Not long ago I was thinking about new projects and I thought that a crocheted keychain might be kind of fun. As I was trying to come up with an idea of what to actually put on the keychain I thought of some crochet owl ornaments that I made last year and decided that a smaller version of that would be really cute. I used the basic shape of that crochet owl and changed it up a little to make it smaller. Those changes combined with a thinner yarn and a smaller hook made a tiny little owl, which is the perfect size for a keychain.

I chose two shades of gray for my crochet owl but you could use two shades of any color you want, or even make it all one color if you prefer.

Crochet-Owl-Keychain-Darice-3Crochet Owl Keychain Supplies:

  • All Things You Acrylic Baby Yarn in Soft Gray and Dove Gray
  • Darice Nickel Plated Key Chains
  • D Crochet Hook
  • Darice Felt Scraps in Black, White, and Gold
  • Fiberfill
  • Fabric or Felt Glue
  • Yarn Needle
  • Darice Scissors

Instructions:

*Finished size approximately 2 inches (owl only)

Start with the soft gray yarn, beginning with a magic ring.

Round 1:in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc).

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc).

Round 3: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next] repeat around (18 sc).

Round 4: 1 sc in each stitch (18 sc).

Round 5: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2] repeat around (24 sc).

Rounds 6-9: 1 sc in each stitch (24 sc).

Change to Dove Gray.

Round 10: [sc2tog, sc in next 6] repeat around (21 sc).

Round 11: 1 sc in each stitch around (21 sc).

Round 12: [sc2tog, sc in next 5] repeat around (18 sc).

Round 13: 1 sc in each stitch.

Crochet-Owl-Keychain-Darice-5Stuff your crochet owl with fiberfill.

Flatten the top edge of your owl body so that you can work through 2 stitches at once to stitch the top closed, your first stitch will be worked through both the first and last stitch of the row before.

Working through both layers you will work 9 stitches across the top as follows: 1 sc, slip stitch in the next 3, place the small ring on the bottom of the keychain between the back and front and slip stitch through both layers and the ring, slip stitch in the next 3, sc in last stitch.

Weave in ends.

Crochet-Owl-Keychain-Darice-6Make 2 wings with Dove Gray.

Row 1: in mr, ch 1, 5 sc (5sc).

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first stitch, 2 hdc in next, 3 dc in next, 2 hdc in next, sc in last (9 stitches).

Cut yarn leaving long ends for sewing.

Sew one wing onto each side of body along the color change.

From the felt cut 2 small white circles, 2 even smaller black circles, and 1 gold triangle. Glue the black circles to the white circles and then glue them to the owl in the darker head portion. Glue the triangle beak below the eyes.

Crochet-Owl-Keychain-Darice-8Once the face is glued in place, all that is left to do is attach your crochet owl to your keys.
