Anthropologie has a sister site called BHLDN that is all about weddings. I’m not planning a wedding, but that doesn’t stop me from eyeballing all the gorgeous products they have on their site. I was smitten with these pretty scripted cake toppers and immediately thought about making my own. Darice offers a huge selection of wood script words so you can easily make your own DIY cake toppers with any message you like! Here’s how to easily make your own wood script DIY cake toppers for just a few dollars.
Scripted Word DIY Cake Toppers Project Supplies:
- Darice Wood Script Words (I used Love, Celebrate, and Princess).
- Darice 1/8 x 12 inch Dowel Rod.
- Darice Crystal Glitter Tube.
- Mod Podge Dimensional Magic.
- Martha Stewart Liquid Gilding.
- DecoArt Metallic Silver Paint.
- Americana Pink Paint.
- Darice Rhinestone Stickers.
Step 1. To begin your DIY cake toppers, paint each word as desired. I painted “Love” with gold liquid gilding, “Celebrate” with silver metallic paint, and “Princess” with pink paint. I painted inside the letters first, then painted the front of each word. Once the front was dry I flipped them over and painted the back of each word.
Step 3. Embellish “Celebrate” by adding a few sticker rhinestones as accents.
Step 4. Cover “Princess” with Dimensional Magic. I outline the word first, then fill it in.
Step 5. Sprinkle glitter onto the Dimensional Magic and let it dry overnight. The Dimensional Magic will “trap” the glitter and keep it from shedding all over your cake. This way you get the shimmer and shine of the glitter without all the mess!
None of these paints are food safe, so be sure to wrap the dowel rod part of your DIY cake topper with plastic wrap or aluminum foil before inserting it in the cake. I just cut a piece of plastic wrap to fit the bottom portion of the stick, wrapped it, then slid it in the cake. A pretty and unexpected way to finish a cake, and there’s still room for candles underneath!
