Create your own wood decoupage DIY frame with 3 items that you probably already have in your craft stash!
I have a bunch of picture frames around my house and they are all painted in some form or another. Wanting to step out of my comfort zone, I decided to take a plain wooden frame and decoupage some tissue paper to it. It was so easy to do and this DIY frame looks great!
- Mod Podge Gloss
- Darice 4″ x 6″ Unfinished Wood Frame
- Paint Brushes
- Darice Metallic Gold Tissue Paper
- DecoArt Spun Gold Acrylic Paint
- X-Acto Knife
Step One. Cut tissue paper into small rectangles. I didn’t measure mine but if I had to guess I’d say there about 1.5″ x 2.5″ each. After you do this, remove glass from frame. This will keep the glass nice and clean and free from tissue paper, paint or decoupage.
Step Two. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to a small area on the top of your DIY frame and smooth one piece of tissue paper onto it. You will get glue on your hands during this project but it peels right off so don’t worry about that.
Continue this process until you have the entire front of the DIY frame covered in tissue paper. Reapply Mod Podge where needed, usually on the corners of the tissue paper. It’s okay to overlap your tissue paper too.
Step Three. Once the front of your frame is entirely covered in tissue paper, wait about 5-10 minutes or so for it to dry and harden up a bit. Take an X-Acto knife and carefully trim the edges of the inside of the frame as well as the outside.
Step Four. Paint the inner portion of your DIY frame where you see the bare wood with Spun Gold paint. Paint the outside of the frame as well. This paint color matches the tissue paper perfectly too! Once your paint is dry, apply a moderate coat of Mod Podge Gloss to the front of the frame to seal the tissue paper and allow to dry. It will look very white but I promise you that it dries clear.
