Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and soon you’ll be seeing pink and red home decor in every store. Why not save yourself some money and make some of those decorations instead of buying them? This Sweetheart Valentine’s Day Tray DIY tutorial only requires a few craft supplies to make and would look adorable in any home or office. You can keep it by the door as a seasonal catch all or fill with candy for a cute and functional gift. Let’s get started!
Sweetheart Valentine’s Day Tray DIY Supplies:
There are tons of ways to customize this project so keep in mind that these instructions are simply suggestions. You can choose any paint color, inset objects, and tray size you’d like. For the purpose of this tutorial, let’s begin by painting the tray a light pink. Make sure to get a nice even coat especially on the sides that will be visible.
Layout the heart shapes evenly at the bottom of the tray. I went with placing them randomly but you could also make a nice pattern instead.
Mix up the epoxy according to the instructions and carefully pour over the hearts.
As far as the epoxy goes, you have two choices for coverage. You can mix up enough so that it just fills the bottom of the tray with the tops of the hearts sticking out of the epoxy or use the full container and completely submerge the hearts. I liked the look of both!
I decided to use the entire bottle of epoxy and completely submerge the hearts. One thing to keep in mind is that the tray is probably not water-tight so the epoxy may leak out a bit. You can either try to seal up the holes with a bit of hot glue before pouring the epoxy or do the epoxy in stages. If you take the second approach, the epoxy will harden and seal the holes as it leaks out. Just make sure to protect your surface with a plastic bag or something else similar. You can cut away the excess leaked epoxy once it’s dry.
I absolutely love the three dimensional look of the hearts set in the epoxy. Hope you enjoy making this fun Sweetheart Valentine’s Day Tray DIY!
