Stenciled quote diy mason jar mug Supplies:
- Darice Mason Jar Mug
- Today Will Be Amazing Stencil Template < click to print
- Adhesive Backed Vinyl
- X-acto Knife & Scissors
- Die Cutting Machine (optional)
- Contact Paper
- Multi-Surface Satin Paint & Paintbrush
Step 1. Start with a clean mug. Wipe the surface you want to paint with some alcohol to get rid of dust and chemicals.
Step 2. Cut your template (download here). If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can cut this by hand (and patience!). Alternatively, you can use letter stickers and tape.
Step 3. Cut each line (you’ll end up with a total of three), and then transfer your vinyl to your mug’s surface with contact paper. Carefully adhere each line to make sure they’re aligned with one another.
Step 4. Paint! Fill in each line with your paint color of choice, and while the paint is still wet, carefully remove the stencil from the DIY mason jar mug.
Step 5. Retouch areas as needed (like lines you want to make thicker) and remove areas with imperfect paint (such as if it bled through the stencil) carefully with a cotton swab. Cure according to your paint’s directions, and you are done!
I love the hand-painted feel of the DIY mason jar mug, and it’s easy to overlook the imperfections with the font as it looks hand-painted with the font I chose. And as I have stated before, you can even create your own designs with just letter stickers! Perfect if you want to add a different quote.

What kind of die cutting machine do you recommend? I have a Cricut but I’m not sure if that is the same as what you mentioned above? I can’t wait to try this!
Hi Diana!
I have never used a Cricut before, but if you can trace the file provided above – it might work. Happy crafting 🙂
Hi, what happens if I wash the mug? Will the paint peel off? Thanks!!
Hi Kara!
Once it’s cured (about 21 days of not using it or oven-bake for faster curing, depending on the paint that you use – look at the instructions), the paint will not peel off and you can wash it by hand or on the top rack of your dishwasher. 🙂
I so want one of these! Beautiful tutorial!
