{Free} Simple Slouch Crochet Hat Pattern

Fall is the perfect time to cuddle up with your yarn and crochet hooks and make something cozy. Today I have a simple slouch crochet hat pattern for you all. This crochet hat pattern is great for beginners, and simple enough that a more experienced crocheter could whip up a hat in just a couple of hours.

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice

Here’s what you will need to make your own!

Slouch Crochet Hat Pattern Supplies:

  • Darice Silky Soft worsted weight yarn
  • Size J (6.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon (optional)
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice-4Simple Slouch Crochet Hat Pattern.

Rnd 1: Starting with a magic loop, ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in magic loop, sl st to join, pull to tighten (12 dc).

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice-6Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to join (24 dc).

Rnd 3: ch 3, 2 dc in next st, * dc, 2 dc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (36 dc).

Rnd 4: ch 3, dc, 2 dc, * dc, dc, 2 dc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (48 dc).

Rnd 5: ch 3, dc, dc, 2 dc, * dc, dc, dc, 2 dc, repeat from * around, sl st to join (60 dc).

Rnds 6-16: ch 3, dc in each st around, sl st to join (60 dc).

Rnd 17: Work in back loops only, ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join (60 sc).

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice-7Rnds 18-19: Repeat Rnd 17. Finish off, weave in ends.

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice-1At this point, your crochet hat pattern is complete! Unless you want to give one more fun little detail. I added a little grosgrain ribbon tag to the brim of my hat.

To make your own ribbon tag, cut a piece of ribbon 4-5 inches long. You could attach the ribbon plain or add a design to the ribbon. If you have a sewing machine, this is a great time to play around with some of the special stitches. I added two triangles to my ribbon.

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice-5After you have sewn a design onto your ribbon, all you need to do is attach the ribbon tag to the hat. Simply fold the ribbon over the brim of the hat and sew it on. I found it was easier to attach the tag using a needle and thread instead of my sewing machine.

Slouch-crochet-hat-pattern-Darice-2Different color ribbons and yarn plus different embroidery options mean you can customize and personalize this crochet hat pattern pretty easily – perfect for the  holiday gift giving!

How can I print out the coin purse pattern and the slouch hat pattern without getting 30 pages of blog.

Hi Bev, I would probably just copy the pattern text you want and paste into a word document to print.

Go ahead and press the print key, then the document will display for you to review. I look at that and find which page or pages I want to print. Change the button that says all and just enter the page number you want to print

I did it!! The first crochet project I ever finished! Lol after 2 false starts. The first was cone like, the 2nd a pancake… both abandoned lol 3rd times the charm! Made the band around the bottom a bit tight tho. But who cares! I finished it! Lol

    Thanks for the pattern!

Thanks! I’m trying it again, but with thicker yarn/bigger crochet hook. Would I have to do less rounds?

I would only adjust the rounds if the yarn is significantly thicker. You may be able to tell as you start out.

Can I use red heart worsted weight yarn for this project? I have some leftover from a previous project.

Hi Tina, I’m not familiar with the difference in US and UK crochet terms but we are located in the US, so I’m assuming Alexis used US terms in the post.

Hi! Thank you for designing such a great beanie pattern, it’s my new favorite and the beanies are so comfortable! I was wondering if I could please get your permission to sell beanies that I make from this pattern?
    Thanks again 🙂

Hi! I have made this hat using this pattern before and it turned out great! I am trying it again to make for a gift but its been a while since I have crocheted. When you DC in rounds more specifically once you start on Row 6 and onward, does your ch 3 count as one DC? Thanks!

    HI there,
    Love your finished product.
I have a question regarding rows 4 and 5 of the pattern
    Row 4 ch 3, 2 dc, *dc, dc, 2dc repeat etc….
Does this mean 4 dc in total in the * ?
    Please help I can’t understand.

    Thank you

Pattern should only use about half of a ball of yarn, depending on what brand you are using. Most skeins have approximately 235 yards.

This pattern is so wonderful, thank you for sharing! I made a couple of these for Christmas gifts and they were a total hit. I’m now working on one for myself. This pattern is one that is so simple & so perfect, it’s almost comforting. I love to crochet this when I need to get my mind off other things.

My favorite yarn to crochet this up with is Red Heart Soft. I had written off Red Heart long ago, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and softness of that yarn! The hat turns out beautifully and super soft yarn gives it the perfect slouch. Thanks again!

Ok so i love this hat…. but i am just teaching myself to crochet… and everytime i do the slip stitch to join i end up having a hole in between the two.. is that normal or am i messing it up? I counted and i have the right amount of stitches everytime… please help!!!

In response, instead of slip stitch around the post, you should slip stitch into the top chain of the chain 3. This should alleviate the space. If you still have a problem after trying this, try doing a chain 3 and DC in the same stitch, once you crochet around, slip stitch into the top of the DC, instead of the CH3. Ignore the CH3 all together. Don’t count it as a stitch. 🙂 Hope this helps 🙂

WOW!! Huge thanks for sharing this pattern! I love the idea of crochet hats as I find them so attractive, but until now, I have never found a pattern that actually fit my head right {without the use of bobbypins}. I just finished one of these this morning, and it turned out so brilliantly, I’m using it the rest of this season!

    Thanks a million!
