My son started kindergarten last year and it’s amazing to see just how different he was from the first to the last day. He looked like a little baby compared to the big kid at the end of the school year. He’s entering 1st grade next month and I thought it would be fun to document that change with a school year DIY time capsule!
Making this school year DIY time capsule couldn’t be easier to put together.
School Year DIY Time Capsule Supplies:
- Darice Clear Paint Can
- School Year DIY Time Capsule Free Printable
- Extra Mementos to Document Your Child’s Personality
What you and your child decide to fill the paint can with is entirely up to you guys! We took his measurement with a piece of string and threw that in there. He also wanted to include some pictures of his brother and favorite babysitter, a fun toy, and few of his favorite candies to help his future self celebrate the end of the year!
Depending on the age and ability of your child, you can either have them fill in the form by themselves or dictate while you jot down the answers. Even if they don’t want to fill out the whole form, at least have them write in their name so that they can compare it to how well they write at the end of the year. I can’t wait to see what my son says he wants to be at the end of the year!
With the form filled out, now it’s time to assemble the DIY time capsule. As I mentioned above, you can fill it with anything but we chose a piece of string cut to his height, one of his favorite toys, some pictures, and some candy he’ll be able to eat on the last day of school. Add the filled in favorites form and the self-portrait and the time capsule will be complete!
All that’s left to do is cut and tape the sealing strip across the closed lid of the paint can and wait until the last day of school to open!
We’re going to keep this little tin nice and safe on the top shelf of his desk all next year and hopefully remember to open it on the last day of school. Maybe I’ll save a reminder in my phone so I don’t forget!
Hope you enjoy this project and have a great time opening up the school year DIY time capsule next year!
