Who says you need a significant other to buy you chocolates? This Valentine’s Day, grab a few of your gal pals and make your own Galentine’s Day marbled chocolate boxes to fill with your favorite candy instead! These paint poured marbled heart boxes are addictive to make and so cute, that you will want to display them even after the candy is gone. Follow along for my marbled candy box tutorial.
Marbled candy box tutorial supplies:
- Darice Paper Mache Heart Boxes
- White Darice Acrylic Paint
- Several Bottles of Colored Acrylic Paint
- Disposable Cups
- Darice Craft Sticks
- Paint Brushes
- Candy Cups
- Covered Work Surface (this will get messy!)
Begin by choosing your paint colors. It is best to select coordinating colors that mix well or different shades of the same color. If you choose contrasting colors you could end up with a brown mess, and no one wants that!
Next, add your paint to the disposable cups and dilute in a 2 parts paint to 1 part water ratio. Use the popsicle stick to stir the paint and water.
Starting with a clean cup, pour a bottom layer of white paint about 1/4” to 1/2” high. Next, layer your paint colors into the cup. Pour a small amount (about a dollop (1 tsp)) on top of the white paint in the cup. Repeat as many times as needed. Fill the cup 1/3 – 1/2 with paint.
Now prime the paper mache heart box surface my giving it a coat of the white paint. This will insure that the marbled paint mixture will spread easily to create the marble look.
Once the surface is primed, pour on the layered paint from the cup across the top of the heart and pick up the lid and tip it to let the marbled paint spread across the entire surface. And then set it down to let the excess paint drip off the sides and the top to dry.
While the marbled painted heart dries, use the rest of the acrylic paint to paint the inside and outside of the bottom portion of the heart box.
Once the paint is dry, add in your candy cups and fill them with your favorite treats!
If hosting a make and take for Galentine’s day with this project, consider having a candy bar set up with different types of candy that guests can use to fill their marbled chocolate boxes with.
When the treats have been eaten you can display the heart box on your mantel or shelf for some fun and colorful Valentine’s Day decor.
