Looking for a fun activity to make with your kids now that summer is in full swing? Inspire their imagination and creativity by making a DIY mini garden that’s all of their own that is just the perfect size for welcoming fairies! With just a few simple supplies and an afternoon of free time, this garden box is so fun to make. Let me fill you in on all the details!
DIY Mini Garden Supplies:
- Darice 12″ Unfinished Wood Box with Handles.
- Darice Wood Script “Believe.”
- Craft Paint in 2 Colors.
- Darice Foam Brushes.
- Spray Adhesive & Heavy Duty Adhesive.
- Darice Extra Fine Glitter.
- Outdoor Mod Podge.
- Drill with 3/16″ Bit (only if using real plants).
- Darice Miniature Garden Tools.
- Darice Faceted Heart Beads (or other decorative beads, stones, etc.).
- Plants & Potting Soil (or for a fail-safe mini garden, use Darice faux succulents!).
To begin, use the foam brush to paint the outside and inside of the wood box with the acrylic paint, applying as many coats as needed for the desired coverage. Allow paint to dry completely.
Paint the “Believe” wood cutout with the other paint color, making sure to cover the side surfaces of the word as well. Set aside to dry completely.
When paint is completely dry, cover the Believe cutout with a layer of adhesive spray.
No fairy garden would be complete without a bit of glitter fairy dust! Immediately pour the glitter on the lettering, and then shake off any excess. Allow adhesive to dry completely before applying 2 coats of outdoor Mod Podge with the foam brush. Set lettering aside to dry.
When the lettering is dry, affix to the front of the box with heavy duty adhesive.
If you are planning to use the planter for natural flowers, create 6 drainage holes in the bottom of the box with the drill and bit.
Now, the fun part: filling and decorating the DIY mini garden for all of your fairy visitors! Pour potting soil into the bottom of the box, and then plant your favorite succulents and/or flowers. (Or, if you want a DIY mini garden that can outlast even the blackest of thumbs, opt to use Darice faux succulents and flowers!) Finish by adding a “path” of the faceted beads, and make sure to nestle in some handy garden tools so the fairies have what they need to keep things in tip-top shape!
Your DIY mini garden is complete!
My children absolutely loved making this DIY mini garden together, and each morning, they wake up and hurry to see if any fairies are waiting to say hello. It is so fun to find activities like this one that inspire creativity and imagination even after the craft supplies have all been put away!
I hope you are inspired to create a bit of magic with your kids this summer, either with this fun DIY mini garden project or some of the other wonderful projects for kids here at Live. Craft. Love.
