With back to school around the corner, now is the perfect time to get crafting for school time! It is a great time to send in small teacher gifts, or create fun ways to take back to school photos with your kids! Either way, this colorful and fun DIY back to school crayon framed chalkboard is so simple to make. It really does make the perfect teacher gift or prop for photos with your kids! This project is so fun, I bet your kids would even love to help out with it!
- Darice 7 x 10″ Chalkboard.
- Crayons (You’ll need approximately 96).
- Darice Low Temp Hot Glue Gun.
- Darice Scissors.
- David Tutera Chalk Pens.
Next, choose how to lay out your crayons. You can place them in a completely random order, or sort them by color, it’s up to you honestly! You can even let your kids decide which color comes next! There is so much room for you to make this DIY back to school project your own.
Then you will use your hot glue gun and glue sticks to carefully glue the crayons onto the edge of the chalkboard, overlapping by about 1″. It is best to use a low temp hot glue gun for this project as hot glue will melt your crayons. So either snag a low temp hot glue gun or use a dual temp hot glue gun on the low setting.
Even with a low temp hot glue gun, your crayons can still melt a bit. I recommend applying the hot glue ONLY to the paper on the crayon to ensure the least amount of melting.
You can choose to try to round your corners or create more of a right-angled corner like I am showing here. Either is totally fine, it’s just a preference thing really.
I used a chalk marker to write “Back to School” on my chalkboard. You can get as creative as you want with this! If you’re using this as a DIY back to school photo prop, you can write your child’s name and the grade he will be going into.
