I love this time of year because I really love wrapping gifts. Every year I experiement a bit with different ways of wrapping gifts, and as much as I love ribbon, sometimes it’s fun to switch it up and use yarn instead. Crocheted gift toppers are a fun alternative to ribbon, and today I’ve got a pattern for a chunky crochet bow that makes an extra special gift topper.
Crochet Bow Supplies:
- Bulky Weight Yarn – I used Darice Folklore
- Size K (6.50 mm) Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle
Row 1: Ch 14, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, ch 6, sc in each of next 3 chs, ch 6, sc in each of next 3 chs, ch 6, sc in each of next 3 chs, ch 6, sc in final 2 chs. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next sc, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop from previous row, dc in each of next 3 sts, repeat from * three times finishing with 2 dcs instead of 3 dcs. Now you can weave the loops of the first two rows together by twisting the bottom ch 6 loop and pulling the ch 6 loop from the second row through the loop. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, dc next two sts together, repeat from * twice, ch 6, skip ch 6 loop,dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops from row 2 and 3 together by pulling the row 3 loops up through the row 2 loops (continue to weave loops together after each row in this manner). Turn.
Row 4: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * three times. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 5: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc next two sts together, repeat from * twice, ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 6: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * three times, dc in final st. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 7: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *sc in ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * three times, dc in final st. Turn.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc the next two sts together, sc the next two sts together, sc in next st, repeat from * once. (8 sc) Turn.
Row 9: Ch 1, sc in same st and each st across (7 sc) Turn.
Row 10: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, *ch 6, sc in next st, repeat from * three times, sc in last st. Turn.
Row 11: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * three times, dc in last st. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 12: Repeat Row 11.
Row 13: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, 2 dc in next st, repeat from *twice, ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 14: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * three times. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 15: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * twice, ch 6, skip 6 ch loop, dc in next 2 sts. Weave loops. Turn.
Row 16: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *sc in ch 6 loop, sc in next 3 sts, repeat from * three times finishing with 2 scs instead of 3 (17 sc). Turn.
Row 17: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc next two sts together, sc in next st, repeat from * three times, sc in final 2 sts. (13 sc). Finish off. Weave in ends.
Crochet Bow Center:
Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 4 remaining chs (5 sc). Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, dc in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *ch 6, skip ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st. Weave loops. Turn.
Rows 4-9: Repeat row 3.
Row 10: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in next st, *sc in ch 6 loop, dc in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st. Turn.
Row 11: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc next 2 sts together, sc in next st, repeat from * (5 sc). Finish off. Weave in ends.
To finish the crochet bow, wrap the center piece around the middle of the bow. Using a yarn needle and a piece of yarn, sew the ends of the center piece together.
I put my big ol’ chunky crochet bow on top of a gift that I wrapped a couple of times with a long crochet chain.
This crochet bow could be used in a lot of different ways as well – I’m thinking sewn onto a bag would be super cute. And you could also use a lighter weight yarn and smaller hook to make a smaller crochet bow. Happy crocheting!
