A bullet journal is a combination of a planner, organizer, journal, goal tracker, scrapbook, sketchbook, and anything else you want it to be! You only need a few simple supplies to get started with your first bullet journal, so what’s stopping you from starting your first bullet journal right now? Keep reading for some fun bullet journal ideas plus free printable habit trackers!
Bullet Journaling Supplies:
- Dotted Grid Notebook
- Brush Tip Markers (I used Studio 71 Dual Tip Alcohol Ink Markers)
- Fine Line Markers (I used Studio 71 Dual Tip Permanent Markers)
- Washi Tape
- Ruler Set
- My Free Flower Habit Tracker Printables (free for personal use only)
- Sticker Paper
- Silhouette Cameo (optional)
Notebook. The first thing you need is a journal or notebook with either dotted grid pages or a simple grid. I prefer a dotted grid page. These dotted grid or grid pages make it easy for you to divide your pages and create all kinds of layouts on your pages.
Markers or Pens. You can use whatever pens, markers, or pencils you like for your bullet journal. You may want to test out your pens or markers on your notebook first to check for bleeding through the pages. Fineliner pens are a popular choice for bullet journaling. I like using brush tip markers for adding color to my layouts.
Washi Tape. Washi tape is great tool for easily adding accents and color to your layouts. Plus it also works great for covering up mistakes! I like to use washi tape folded over the edge of an important page to make it easy to find later on.
Rulers. I recommend a ruler or straight edge for helping you to get straight lines. A protractor or rounded ruler is also great for making circles and round elements.
Now that you have your supplies, let’s talk about what to put in your bullet journal!
Bullet Journal Ideas
The best thing about a bullet journal is that you can make it anything you want to be! You can use it for organizing your schedule, meal planning, memory keeping, tracking habits, setting goals, and so much more. I have collected some bullet journaling ideas here to get you started, but feel free to be creative and come up with your own layouts and ideas! I also recommend checking out instagram and pinterest for lots more bullet journal inspiration.
Use your Bullet Journal for Organization
I love the beautiful calendar layouts and flexible planner pages you can create with a bullet journal. You can create monthly calendars, weekly spreads, or full pages dedicated to each day – whatever works for you!
I love the idea of starting off your planning for the week or month with a brain dump. This is basically just getting all of the ideas, to-dos, deadlines, events, etc. out of your brain and on to the page. This will help you plan out the month or week ahead.
Use your Bullet Journal for Self-Improvement and Goal Setting
Bullet journals are a great tool for helping you to create new habits and reach your goals. If you want to save money, eat better, lose weight, or reach other goals, you can use your bullet journal to track your progress and motivate you.
Habit trackers are another great tool that are really popular with bullet journal enthusiasts. You can create individual habit trackers for each of the habits you want to track or create a simple chart for all of the habits you are trying to develop that month like the on below. Simply color in the box when you accomplish that goal each day.
If you want a little short cut, you can use the printable flower shaped habit tracker that I created. To use the printable, just download the designs from the supply list above, print out the designs on sticker paper, and then cut out around the design (you can cut it out by hand or cut it out using the print and cut feature on a Silhouette or other cutting machine). Finally, place the sticker in your journal, and start tracking! Each sticker can track 4 habits, and the download includes trackers with 28, 30, or 31 days.
Use your Bullet Journal to Document your Life
You can also use your bullet journal as a mini-scrapbook or journal. Tape in favorite photos or mementos and jot down the ups and downs of your day to day life.
Mood trackers are very popular in bullet journaling and are a great way to see patterns in your mood. You can use whatever grid or design you like! Assign different emotions or moods a color (happy, sad, anxious, angry, productive, etc.) and then color in the tracker each day!
I like to track my sleep schedule. It can be great to compare your sleep tracker to your mood tracker or other habit trackers to see how they might correlate.
Use your Bullet Journal for Your Favorite Things
Why not use your bullet journal to make a list of your favorite books, movies, TV shows, bands, or anything else you love!
You can also create lists of things you want to do this year or season!
There are just so many ways to use a bullet journal! I hope you are inspired by these bullet journal ideas. What will you use your first bullet journal for?
